I Found a Hand-Embroidered Sari Blouse in an Astoria Thrift Store

Somebody's grandmother's zardozi ended up on a $6 rack in Queens, and I couldn't leave it there

Dispatch from Steinway Street, Astoria

I wasn't supposed to be in Astoria. I took the N to meet a friend at a Greek place on 30th Ave and got there forty minutes early because I misread the text like a professional.

So I did what I always do with forty accidental minutes. I found the nearest thrift store — a cramped, gloriously overstuffed one off Steinway Street — and started digging.

And there, wedged between a Champion hoodie and something that was aggressively cheetah print, was a hand-embroidered sari blouse. Deep maroon silk. Real zardozi — the gold metallic thread work my nani used to say costs more than the whole sari sometimes.

Six dollars. It was six dollars.

I stood there holding this hand-embroidered sari blouse feeling something between joy and grief. Because somebody made this by hand, for hours, probably squinting under bad light. Somebody wore it to a wedding and felt beautiful. And somehow it traveled all the way to a $6 rack in Queens.

I think about this constantly in my job. We talk about "sustainability" in fashion like it's a marketing color palette, but this is the real version. Garments outlive us. This blouse outlived a marriage, maybe a whole family, definitely a continent.

I bought it, obviously. On the walk to dinner I texted a picture to my mummy and she zoomed in and said the stitching was Lucknowi-influenced and that her generation would never have donated it — they'd have cut it into cushion covers first.

That's the difference, isn't it. We throw away. They repurposed until there was nothing left to repurpose.

I'm not going to cut mine into anything. I'm going to fix the two loose hooks and wear it with wide-leg trousers to the studio and let it keep living.

Nothing beautiful should end up on a $6 rack. But thank god this one waited for me.
