The First Cold Morning on the J Train This Week

Autumn arrived overnight and I wasn't dressed for it.

Dispatch from Kosciuszko Street Station, Bushwick

✦

I left my apartment in Bushwick this morning wearing a linen jacket like a fool. Like a woman who had not checked the weather. Like a woman who believed September owed her something.

The first cold morning always arrives like this. Not gently. It just shows up on the platform at Kosciuszko Street and slaps you awake.

The J train came screeching in over the rooftops, that elevated stretch where you can see all of Brooklyn wake up if you look. I didn't look. I was too busy hugging myself and regretting every decision.

My mummy used to layer me in three sweaters before school in Ahmedabad on days that were, in retrospect, twenty-eight degrees. I laughed at her then. This morning I would have accepted all three sweaters and a fourth.

The first cold morning does something to New Yorkers. Everyone on the train had the same face. The face of people who thought summer was a permanent arrangement and just got the eviction notice.

A man near the door was in shorts, defiant, shivering. Denial is a personality here. I respected it.

By the time we crossed the bridge into Manhattan, the sun was doing that thin gold thing it does in autumn, the light that makes even the Delancey Street stop look like a movie. Cold but beautiful. The city's whole brand.

I got off at Essex, walked into a bodega, and bought a coffee I did not need purely to hold something warm. The chai at home would have been better. Everything at home would have been better. That's homesickness for you, arriving right on schedule with the cold.

But here's the thing about the first cold morning. It means the good coats come out. It means my thrifted wool everything gets its season. It means soup, and scarves, and the specific joy of a heated train car.

I texted my roommate: it's over, summer is dead. She sent back a single skull emoji. Correct response.

Tomorrow I will dress properly. Today I earned my shivering.

Layer up, my loves. The J train does not care about your feelings.
