Thrifting the Whole L Train in One Afternoon

A styling hunt from the East Village to Bushwick, measured in subway stops and stubborn hangers.

Dispatch from Jefferson Street, Bushwick

✦

I spent all of Wednesday thrifting along the L train for a client pull, and my back hurts in a way that feels earned.

The assignment was autumn layering, sustainable where possible, nothing that screams it tried too hard. So I did what I always do when the budget is real but not infinite: I treated the L line like a shopping mall laid on its side.

Start in the East Village, around 1st Avenue. There's a spot I won't name because the good ones you protect, but their rack of oversized blazers was stupidly good this week. Then back on the L, one stop, over to the shops near Bedford where everything costs more because Williamsburg knows what it is.

Thrifting along the L train is a whole discipline. You learn to read a store in ten seconds. You learn which places steam their stuff and which just shove it on hangers. You learn that the real treasure is usually two stops past where the tourists get off.

So I rode it out to Bushwick. Jefferson Street. The big warehouse-y spots where you dig like your rent depends on it, because for my clients, kind of, it does.

And there she was. A 1990s chocolate-brown wool blazer, boxy shoulders, buttons the color of ghee, lining still intact. Fourteen dollars. I actually said out loud, no way, and a guy near the denim nodded like he understood completely.

That's the thing about thrifting along the L train that I can't explain to people outside fashion. It's not about saving money, though it is. It's about the hunt. The patience. The way a secondhand garment carries a whole life before it reaches your client's shoulders.

My mother tailors. She's been altering and re-wearing and remaking clothes my whole life, before sustainability was a word brands put on hangtags. I think she'd be proud that I turned her thrift into a career, even if she'd still say the blazer needs taking in at the waist. She'd be right.

I steamed everything at home at midnight, feet throbbing, blazer on my dress form glowing under the lamp.

Worth every stop.

What's the best thing you ever thrifted? I need to feel something.
