Thrifting for the Perfect Coat in the Chelsea Flea

A camel wool miracle, forty dollars, and the ghost of whoever wore it first

Dispatch from Chelsea Flea, West 25th Street, Manhattan

✦

I went thrifting for the perfect coat this weekend, which is a sentence I've been saying every October for four years and finally, finally delivered on.

The Chelsea Flea on West 25th Street is my church. I got there early, before the crowds, coffee in one hand, intentions pure. I was not going to buy anything I didn't need. I was going to be disciplined.

Reader, I lasted eleven minutes.

There was a vendor near the back with a rack of old wool coats and there it was. Camel. 1970s. A real wool-cashmere blend, heavy in that way new coats never are because nobody makes them like this anymore. The lining was a little worn at the cuff. Forty dollars.

I work in fashion. I see new coats every season, coats that cost more than my rent, coats that will pill and sag by February. And then here was this thing, fifty years old, still softer and more honest than anything on a showroom rail.

Thrifting for the perfect coat is really about patience. You cannot force it. You have to go empty-handed a hundred times, dig through the ugly polyester, let the flea humble you. And then one Saturday the right thing just appears, holding the shape of a stranger.

I kept thinking about who wore it first. Some woman in the seventies walking down Fifth Avenue, collar up. I like that my clothes have a past. In my line of work we talk a lot about sustainability like it's a trend, but my nani reused every sari until it became a quilt. Secondhand isn't a movement to me. It's just how I was raised.

I wore the coat home on the 1 train and caught my reflection in the dark window near 18th Street and genuinely did not recognize this chic woman. Who is she. Where did she get that coat. (The Chelsea Flea. Forty dollars. I will tell anyone who asks.)

The best things you own already lived a whole life before you. Give them a second one.
