The Donation Bag by My Door I Still Can't Give Away

On thrift, memory, and the kurta that refuses to leave

Dispatch from Housing Works, Crosby Street, SoHo

✦

There's been a donation bag sitting by my door for three weeks now. Big black one, from the Housing Works on Crosby, folded down and full and judging me every time I leave for the L.

I work in fashion. I preach sustainable wardrobe editing to anyone who'll listen — buy less, keep longer, thrift smart. And still, I cannot get this one bag down the stairs and around the corner.

So this week I opened it. Big mistake. Or the exact right one.

Because on top was the mustard kurta my mum sent me my first winter here, the one that arrived smelling like our flat in Ahmedabad, like agarbatti and the dabba of ghee she keeps by the stove. I've worn it maybe twice. It doesn't fit my New York life. It fits my New York homesickness perfectly.

Underneath: a thrifted leather jacket from a stoop sale in Greenpoint that I overpaid for because the seller had kind eyes. A dress I wore to a wedding in Jackson Heights where I danced until the DJ played the same Ranveer song twice and nobody minded.

This is what nobody tells you about sustainable wardrobe editing. The math isn't about closet space. It's about which memories you're willing to fold into a black bag and carry down four flights.

I kept the kurta. Obviously. It went back in the drawer where it will keep smelling faintly of home until it doesn't, and then I'll cry about that too.

The leather jacket stays — a good thrifted piece is a friend for life, and this one has years left. The wedding dress, though. That one I zipped into the bag. Someone in this city should get to dance in it now.

Good sustainable wardrobe editing isn't ruthless. It's honest. You keep what still holds you and you release what's just holding space. That's the whole practice.

The bag went to Housing Works this morning. Lighter by one dress, heavier by nothing at all.

Keep the thing that smells like home. Give away the thing that wants to be worn again.
